Green Beans for Dogs!

October 15, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

Getting tired of giving apple slices and carrot sticks to your dog? Then it is time to introduce green beans!

Green beans is low in calories, high in fiber and can be a light snack to give between meals or as a reward. It is best served cooked and if using canned green beans, please ensure that it has no added salt.

One thing to be careful though, is that adding too much green beans may cause gas since your dog may not be able to handle the sudden increase in fiber.

And always remember to give your dog plenty of water when adding more fiber to their diet, otherwise they could end up constipated.

Benefits of Whole Foods

I am thrilled to share an article that promotes adding whole foods to a dog’s diet!

At Dog On Nutrition, we strongly believe in feeding our dogs a wholesome, natural diet because that offers the best nutrition for our pooch. However, we do recognize that for certain people and dogs, a natural whole foods diet may not be possible, and in those cases, we still encourage adding in whole foods in small quantities as treats to add variety to a dog’s diet. It can be as simple as sharing half a banana with your dog in the morning, or tossing him a handful of blueberries into his bowl when you enjoy a bowl of yogurt with berries, or adding in some steamed vegetables to his meal while you prepare yours.

Read through our previous blog posts to find other snack ideas and find out which best human foods to share with your dog.

Nuts for Dogs?

March 13, 2015 by · Leave a Comment

While nuts is a very nutritious food for humans, it may not be the best option for your dog. Walnuts and macadamia nuts are both unsafe. Almonds and cashews are safe but may contain too much fats which can be hard on the digestive system. The best and safest choice would be peanut butter, but only the natural peanut butter which contains 100% peanuts and nothing else (no added sugars, hydrogenated oils or other additives). But keep in mind, only give peanut butter as an occasional small treat as it still is high in calories and fats!

Omega-3 Fats for Dogs

Omega-3 fats can be important for joint health, keeping their coat shiny and healthy, and also keeping their immune system strong. Fatty fish, such as salmon or sardines, are the best source of omega-3s. Alternatively, you can always sprinkle in ground flaxseed (start slow and in small amounts, 1-2 teaspoons daily) into your dog’s foods for omega-3 fats from a plant source.

Dairy for Dogs in Vancouver!

August 7, 2014 by · Leave a Comment

Most dogs are lactose-intolerant, which means that they have a hard time digesting the lactose in dairy products such as milk, and may result in stomach upset and diarrhea.

However, most yogurt and cheese have very low lactose content and can be an easy, natural, wholesome treat to share with your pooch.

Just be sure to give low-fat yogurt and cheese as a diet high in fat increases the risk of pancreatitis for dogs. Also, it is best to choose plain yogurt because flavoured one tend to have added sugar which is merely empty calories for your dog.
