Older Dogs Nutritional Needs

December 4, 2012 by

The nutritional needs for your dog once they are older than seven years begin to change. They may be at risk;
 deterioration of skin and coat
 loss of muscle mass
 more frequent intestinal problems
 arthritis
 obesity
 dental problems
 decreased ability to fight off infection

In order to delay or prevent the risks, it is best to follow these guidelines;
 Reduce the calories in your older dogs’ diet to reduce weight gain.
 Maintain their protein as this helps with maintaining muscle mass.
 To maintain your dog’s coat add omega-6 fatty acid to their meal plan.
 Focus on antioxidants to help with their immune system.

Check with your local dog nutritionist before changing your dog’s meal plan.
